DNCRS

Dr. Efron Gajere Director/CEO, NCRS Jos.

The National Centre for Remote sensing,(NCRS) Jos, is a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. NCRS is one of the six (6) Development Centres of Excellence under the aegis of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Abuja. NCRS is the focal point for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System Activities in Nigeria.

In Today‘s economic environment, technology is one of the strongest currencies. Recently, more of the world’s nations have recognized the link between technological prowess and economic advancement. They have invested large scale resources in upgrading their technological capabilities and in many cases their efforts have been fruitful.

Space technology provides the avenue for obtaining information about the environment. The use of this technology in observing interactions between the earth surface and the atmosphere has had profound impact on human life and activities.

The benefits of the nation’s investment in space technology have since begun to manifest in all facets of our socio-economic lives.

At the National Centre for Remote Sensing. Jos, we are doggedly committed more than ever before to live up to expectation as the focal point of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) activities in Nigeria. Renewed and determined efforts are being made to reposition the Center for better service delivery.

Our research scope has been expanded and refocused to accommodate critical issues of national relevance. These include: Water resources and Climate; Geology and Petroleum Exploration, Agriculture and Land Resources; Settlement and Social Statistics; and Ecology and Environment.

Our consultancy unit, the NCRS consult has been re-energized and it is fully operational. It is structured to handle, among others, training in various areas of Remote sensing application and GIS and project implementation. A separate bulletin containing our services is available. Please feel free to contact us whenever you need any of our services.Furthermore, we have a functional space research Library which is enriched with recent text books, scientific journals and a host of other publications.

In the area of capacity building and manpower development through training and retaining of about 90% of our scientific staff both locally and internationally. Also, a number of administrative staff have benefitted from sundry training programmes.

The Center trained the Industrial Training (IT) students and NYSC members attached to the Centre on fundamentals of Remote Sensing Applications, GIS and office administration to further develop their skills.
The NCRS Ground Receiving Station (NCRS-GRS) is located at 9° 53.00’ N, 8° 51.00’ E. It consists of the universal ground station installed with an antenna system ranging from 0.8m to 2.4m in diameter for receiving various Earth observing data, archiving of local imagery data and processing in near real-time mode. The NCRS-GRS is receiving real – time data in X-band and L-band from six different international Earth Observation satellites, such as Terra/Aqua, Metop-A, NOAA 15, 18, 19 and capable of receiving from NigeriaSat- 2 and X, LandSat series and others.

We have 8years experience in the areas of Ground Station Operations and Management, Satellite Data Acquisition Station from Earth Observation Satellites, Automated Operation of Mission Processing and Archiving Centre, (PAC) and real-time data processing and distribution.

Once again, I will like to express my sincere appreciation to the staff for their commitment and dedication especially our scientific staff who has demonstrated their competence in various applications of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System and the Government, without who the achievements so far recorded, could not have been possible.
